March 20, 2020. We drove up I-5 to pick up my new Golden Retriever. It was the day the world shut down…COVID! I needed this Golden…#6. My heart had been broken two months earlier when my young Golden, Oakley, died…too soon. I felt so lucky…Dazzle was going to be mine!
We drove home to Vashon Island with Dazzle. We shut the door on Covid and we spent the next year, totally together, and we bonded!
Dazz, as I call her, is the calmest and most people oriented dog I have ever owned. She is beautiful inside and out. Very intuitive, she seems to know who needs her attention. I knew she would be the perfect therapy dog! Oakley and I had been a Pet Partner Team, visiting hospitalized children. I knew Dazzle would be perfect for the job. During those long months of isolation and Covid, Dazz and I attended weekly outdoor training classes to prepare us to be a Pet Partner Team, and in 2022, when evaluations were finally being offered again…Dazzle and I passed the tests and became a team.
Our first opportunities were attending Covid vaccine clinics at all the island schools. Dazzle sat with students of all ages as they anxiously awaited their shot. They closed their eyes and squeezed Dazzle hard…then said “ that didn’t even hurt. “ Job well done Dazz! We have also been a part of the middle school’s Suicide Prevention Fairs, where students learn ways to cope with stress. Dazzle is a good teacher…patient, kind and non judgemental. Students often see us in the community…and the recognize Dazzle and they always pet her and give her a hug!
On her off days, Dazzle stays in shape, by hiking daily with our dog friends. My faithful companion is always at my side. She is recognized by many as she rides on my paddle board in the summer. She is my garden helper and grazer of all berries within her reach. She is an observer of the deer in our pasture, respectful of their sharp hooves. She is an amazing mole exterminator, and can scoop them up on the run! She welcomes everyone calmly into our home…respectful and always ready to be petted.
I love this dog. She just turned eight, and has the beginning of a sugar face. She is still quick, agile and full of life. We get up early every morning and watch day break. I am thankful everyday that we are both strong, healthy, happy.
We still have lots to do…together.
