My piano teacher recognized Brinkley’s potential first: “He’s going to be a show dog! He floats when he moves!” I’d wanted to be part of the show dog world since reading “Big Red” when I was about ten.
Having Brinkley has been a dream come true: The excitement of his first point, the thrill of his first Best of Breed, his first Group placement, the amazement of seeing him awarded Best Opposite Sex at Westminster under Nancy Talbott, and the suspense of his first Best in Show. Being in the Top Twenty is the chocolate sprinkles on the ice cream sundae!
Brinkley has also allowed me to dabble in obedience and rally. His antics in both have been crowd pleasers. Recently he introduced the stop, drop and roll into off leash heeling during Open A competition.
He believes in always being where I am – usually under my feet – be it at my desk, sewing machine or piano. Any moment not being petted is a moment wasted! Unless a delivery truck enters the driveway and the driver needs help finding the porch – and then can’t leave without giving lots of pets and hopefully a treat.
Brinkley is an ambassador for golden retrievers: He’s loving, gentle and playful, with soulful eyes. He’s a favorite visitor to bar trivia night and the local feed store. Favorite activities at home include tromping in the garden, being mauled by grandchildren, and supervising the chickens.
Several of his offspring are now doing well in the show ring. What a thrill having his daughter win Best of Breed, from the classes, over him on her way to her championship.
Along with Brinkley’s accomplishments in the ring, he has brought me into the show community filled with friendship, humor, and support. Thank you Tonya, and Brinkley, for allowing me to share in this adventure!
